THE LITTE ENGINE THAT COULD CONQUEERS THE TOP POWERS

On August 29, the new team from a little town just outside of Ensenada Mexico, conqueered the Baja Softball world beating the Tijuana Cobritas in the finals at the City of Tijuana Softball Cup Tournament.

Led by the outstanding play of MVP Pitcher Aileen Gutierrez and 2nd Pitcher Maria Fernanda Martinez Ybarrola, the Uvitas dominated the Cobritas in the final game 5 runs to 1.

"Aileen simply shut them down with her relentless pitching" said Head Coach Charles Tawil. "She was throwing massive heat and their hitters simply could not get the bat around fast enough to connect.

To start off the Offense, Maria Fernanda Martinez Ybarrola hit an out of the park home run which set the tone for a strong offensive day for the team from little El Sauzal.

To get to the finals, the team faced the Cobritas in the first round, a game that went to double overtime with 2 extra innings ending in a tie 5 runs to 5. "It was brutal" said Assistant Coach Randy Bowser, "The kids on both sides would not capitulate. It definitely set the tone for what would be a finals game later in the tournament"

In the other qualifing game, the Uvitas defeated the Tijuana Yankees 6 runs to 1.

CHAMPIONS: Baja Softball All-Stars 10u Win the Baja Beach Bash for 2009

Going undefeated in 5 games, the Baja Girls Softball League All-Star Team called the Ensenada All-Stars went undefeated in this weeks Baja Beach Bash Tournament held in El Sauzal.

With fantastic teams Mexicali Chicas, Tijuana Marios, and San Luis Rio Colorado, the 10u All-Stars met every challenge along the way winning in convincing fashion in the final game 7-2 against a classy and very strong opponent; the Mexicali Chicas. Final Results

In the days past, local club teams from the area, Toxiko, Chispitas, and El Sauzal would play against the outside competition and would NEVER win it all. The talent was simply spread too thin among the 3 teams that would normally travel to play in outside tournaments and it was just never a true representation of the best of the City of Ensenada.

3 months ago, Charles Tawil, the Director of Baja Girls Softball League proposed a "What If we put our best foot forward and combined all the best players into one team." whereby an "All-Star" team would be voted in from the best of the league to represent the area. He postulated that this new team would represent the best the Ensenada area had to offer and would be competitive and even give the area the best chance to win it all.

So the Board of Directors credit and the parents agreed with Director Tawil and the All-Stars were born; a champion waiting to happen.

"Against all odds and obstacles, the people took a chance on being great and put old selfish club centric egos aside for the benefit of winning it all. It worked" said Director Tawil. "The dominating wins this weekend showed clearly what can be accomplished when a winning system with devoted coaches, parents, and players all work together"

In this spirit, Director Tawil would like to acknowledge all the players, coaches and parents for their hard work and effort in bringing a title home.

"This was the ultimate team victory and so many people sacraficed and deserve credit for the victory" said Tawil. "Not one player, coach or parent stood out, it really was everyone who won this championship and that's that true mark of a championship team".

Calexico Dynasty 12u Wins Baja Beach Bash 2009

The Calexico Dynasty 12u Travel Team won the 1st Annual Baja Softball Beach Bash this past weekend.

Led by Coach David Jimenez, the Calexico Dynasty team went undefeated against the best players in the Ensenada area including 2 All-Star teams.

"This was the best coached team with the most disciplined players we've ever faced" said Baja Softball League Director Charles Tawil. "It was a pleasure hosting this outstanding team with their first class players, coaches, and parents. They are definitely something to model ourselves after and something for our players to learn from."

In the 10u division, the Baja Softball League Ensenada All-Stars went undefeated to take the 1st place trophy against the Mexicali Chicas, Tijuana Marios, and San Luis Rio Colorado.

"In the finals, we faced an excellent opponent in the well coached and disciplined Mexicali Chicas" said Baja Softball League Director, Charles Tawil "They gave us everthing they had to challenge us all the way and made the victory even more sweet to savor because of the intensity of the competition.

The championship game final score was 7 - 2 in favor of the Baja Softball League Ensenada All-Stars.

The All-Stars players worked super hard to reach the mountain top. To get them there was a super big effort by the parents and coaches "It was not easy. We all faced many obstacles that made getting to the top hard on us and made many sacrafices so that the kids would have a chance to be competitive and give them a shot at a title run. For me, it was a pleasure to guide them to the top" said Tawil "but in the end, it was truly all the players. They truly earned it through hard work, determination, and effort.

BAJA SOFTBALL BEACH BASH THIS WEEKEND
The Baja Girls Softball League hosts the 1st Annual Baja Softball Beach Bash Tournament. Teams from Calexico, Mexicali, San Luis Rio Colorado, Tijuana, and Ensenada will be participating in both 10 and Under and 12 and Under divisions. Games Start at 10am on Saturday and End on Sunday with the 12 and Under Finals at 1:30pm and the 10 and Under Finals at 3:00pm. There will be food, fun, and softball. The public is invited to come watch the best young players in Mexico play against the first US team to visit and play in Ensenada.

ENSENADA 12U ALL-STARS PLAY IN TIJUANA
Last week, the Ensenada 12u All-Stars played the Tijuana Marios winning 12-5. In the other game the Tijuana 14u All-Stars beat the Ensenada 12u All-Stars 14-9.

2 weeks ago, the Tijuana Marios 10u team visited Enenada to play 2 friendlies. Ensenada 10u All-Stars won 12-6. In the other game, the Ensenada 12u All-Stars beat the Marios 19-9

EQUIPMENT
This past week, we received a shipment of equipment courtesy of many leagues in California for our house league that starts this August. The donationa drive was organized by Cindy Casey and her husband, Dave Casey. We also received a nice gift bag for the kids from Doc. Patch. Thanks guys, the suppport for our kids is greatly appreciated in the biggest way.

2009 Spring Season Champions: The Fokitas

The Fokitas Smash and Thrash the Bat Girls to Take League Championship

After beating the Calaveritas 8-2 in the Semi-Finals earlier in the day, the Fokitas rolled into the championship game confident playing the # 1 ranked Bat Girls for the Baja Girls Softball League Championship.

From the start, the Fokitas took it hard to the Bat Girls starting with a tight defense led by Pitchers Veronica Fonseca snf Anna Maria Villavincenzio along with notable play from Daniela Hadar Hernandez, Jacqueline Castillo, Alejandra Mendoza, Fernanda Higuera, Esmeralda Magallanes Sandez, Valeria Jasani Vazquez Siraitare, Alma Lizardo, Selina Romero Solis & Martha Orozco. They simply were making plays on the ball shutting down the Bat Girls in the first inning and it continued for 6 straight innings.

At bat, the Fokitas were almost perfect. From the start, they were on fire getting hits from their full line up and creating offensive opportunities on every chance.

By the time the 3rd inning rolled around it was already 8-0 and the Bat Girls simply could not find their way in the batters box. Frustrated, they also began making uncharacteristic unforced errors on defense sealing their fate. The rout was on.

The game ended 15-2 with the Fokitas taking the Championship convincingly with the strongest performance of the year.

The Bat Girls lead by team captain Ana Claudia Lopez Cervantes had a super great season coming in first place during league play. But they met a hot Fokitas team who closed out the season on them strong giving the Bat Girls the 2nd place trophy.

The Calaveritas led by Aileen Gutierrez, Valerie Zamora, and Bianca Morales received the 3rd place finish by beating the Zooritas led by Maria Fernanda Rodriquez and Michelle Coral by a score of 8-6.

The Estrellitas came in 5th while the Panteras came in 6th place.

PLAYOFFS: A Perfect Girls Softball Storm Hits El Sauzal

Stunning Upset Shocks Girls Softball Playoffs

It was a sunny day in El Sauzal on Saturday, but yesterday, the area was hit by a perfect storm.

In a stunning upset the # 6 Seed Zooritas defeated # 3 seeded Panteras in the first round of the Baja Girls Softball League playoffs 13 - 5. Led by pitchers Maria Fernanda Martinez and Michelle Coral and the big hits of Jennifer Martinez, Andrea Flores, Lizbeth Calderon, and Paloma Jimenez, the Zooritas, who only won 1 game during the regular season put together 6 innings of perfect softball against a team that featured two of the best pitchers in the league, Valeria Hernandez and Vannessa Vargas Nuñes along with premier hitters Isabel Pantoja and Ullvia Monica Damaso.

As major underdogs, the Zooritas put together a perfect game when it counted the most and shocked the heavily favored Panteras. "I can't believe we played like that" said Zooritas Coach Maria de Jesus Lencioni. "We just played every inning well and made plays with enthusiasm" said Assistant Coach Mario Edgardo Núñez Castro.

"Our Panteras played good but we ran into a hot team. We made a few errors setting us back a little bit but we just could not get past their defense to score runs" said Coach Ivan Damaso. "They played a perfect game against us and they deserved the victory.

In the other first round game, the # 4 seed Calerveritas led by pitchers Valerie Zamora and Aileen Gutierrez with big hits from Bianca Morales, Daniella Perez, Reyna Radillo, dominated the # 5 seed Estrellitas led by pitchers Daryanna Velasquez , Joanna Sandoval, and Illiana Hurtado by a score of 13 - 4.

Both the Calerveritas and Zooritas advance to the semi-finals against the # 1 seeded Bat Girls led by Coach Christina Mayoterena and # 2 seeded Fokitas led by coach Patty Campuzano on May 30th at the Sports Fields in El Sauzal. The semi-final winners advance to the Championship game.

Ensenada's Win over Brawley Wildcats of USA Makes Softball History

Mexicali Chicas meltdown in the Hot Sun

The 12u Ensenada All-Stars traveled to the California city of Chula Vista on Saturday May 9th to play in the International Friendship Games hosted by Councilman Rudy Ramirez of the City of Chula Vista.

In their first game they faced the very strong San Diego Elite and lost 13-4. Coach Mario Edgardo Nuñez Castro said "The San Diego Elite team was physically big. We've never faced such a big team and our players were intimidated at first. But we soon realized that we could stay on the field with them. The ASA rules were a bit confusing but we adjusted and played on and found a way to give our best effort. It was an excellent first game for us and we learned that we belong and could compete in the USA."

In their 2nd game, the Ensenada All-Stars made softball history beating the Brawley Wildcats 4-3.

Brawley is located in the Imperial Valley of Southern California just north of Calexico. It was the first time in Ensenada youth softball history that they beat a team from the USA. Director of the Baja Girls Youth Softball League Charles Tawil said "we are proud of our players, coaches, and parents. They worked super hard for this event and to have such a great win over a travel team from the USA showed that we belong and can play with the best".

In the 3rd game, they took it the Mexicali Chicas wining 10-8. Coach Mario Edgardo Nuñez Castro said "Mexicali had been beating us in the recent past. Today, we finally showed them that this is a new day and the Ensenada All-Stars are competitive and ready to meet the challenges of the future. With our new All-Star system of sending the very best players from our local Baja Girls Softball League, we will now always be able to put our very best players on the field against the outside competition and that is giving us a winning formula."

In the last game fo the day, the rematch, they lost to the Brawley Wildcats 10-3 to secure the 3rd place trophy. Coach Mario Edgardo Nuñez Castro said "Everything was great. The girls played hard. They all played and fun. The kids were super happy to be part of such a great event and share the cultural exchange with the City of Chula Vista and the players from the USA."

Sal Silva, Director of the San Diego Elite and a tournament organizers said that there was a very sad disappointment. It came when the Mexicali Chicas 12u team were rude and insulting to the Brawley Wildcats and their coaches during their game. "It was a sad display of poor sportsmanship" said a very disappointed Silva. "Some of their parents and coaches cursed at some of the moms from the Brawley.

In addition, the Mexicali Chica's 16u team quit and walked off the field when they were playing our San Diego Elite 14u team showing very poor sportsmanship." In addition he added that "the Mexicali coaches accused our Elite team of cheating. Sad! I think their coach wanted out because the game looked to be getting out of hand. It was only a 3 - 1 game but their were no outs with runners on 2nd and 3rd. Watching them quit was extremely disappointing."

Overall, the tournament was a success. Tournament Officials say they will host it again next year. Unfortunately, they doubt Mexicali will be invited next year.

Ensenada All-Stars Off to Sonora For Big 12 & Under Tournament

The New Baja Girls Softball League of Ensenada has just announced that it’s brand new ALL-STAR teams will be traveling to San Luis Colorado, Sonora, Mexico on April 4-5 to participate in a friendly tournament for 12 & Under with teams from Mexicali, Calexico, Tijuana, and San Luis Colorado.

The league is sending two teams both 12 and Under along with it’s 10 and Under All-Star teams to play. The players are chosen from the very best of all of the league players at the end of each season by vote of the Board of Directors and Coaches.

"Its a fair way to pick the teams and it gives opportunity for every player in the league to compete for a spot each season" says Ivan Damazo, League Board Member and Coach of the 12 & Under All-Star Team.

The teams feature outstanding pitching and players chosen from the pool of players who play in the Baja Girls Softball Recreation League and voted in by the Coaches and Board of Directors. The 12 and Under Team features the pitching of Valeria Hernandez, Anna Maria Villavicenzio, Illiana Beltran and the double trouble twins Alexia and Alexis Coral.

The 10 and Under Team features pitchers Veronica Fonseca, Valeri Zamora, Vanessa Nuñes, Paola Prada, Aileen Guitierrez and Maria Fernanda Martinez.

"We have two strong teams and we think we can compete on the field with the other more established teams and associations" says Patty Campuzano, League Board Member and the Coach of the 10 and Under All-Star Team.

San Luis Colorado is located just south of Yuma Arizona.

2009 Spring Season Opening Day

It was a super sunny Opening Day for our spring season 2009. The Baja Girls Softball League celebrated with a local band playing the national anthem, over 100 girls in attendence, coaches, and league leaders.

Youth Fastpitch Softball in Mexico Needs the Same Division Eligibility for all Leagues and Teams

Last week our El Sauzal All-Star 12 and Under team traveled to Ensenada to play teams from Tijuana, Mexicali, and San Luis Colorado, along with a few teams from Ensenada. It was a super fun tournament and the hosts were gracious and did an excellent job.

However, to bring our team, we were informed that our players could NOT be 13 years old the actual day of the tournament. Since we use the same exact rules that our friends at ASA Softball in the USA, it means we go by the year born and not birth date. What meant for us is that we had to leave 3 of our players home because they turned 13 a few weeks before the tournament.

On the surface, it's not a big deal. In fact, this seems to be the current set of rules that most groups in Mexico go by so people seem comfortable with it. But it is confusing. convoluted, and everyone seems to have a bit of a different take on the rules and so it's problematic. We need standardized eligibility rules.

I mean, for us the challenge is that every time we go to tournament, we have to bring a different team. That causes team chemistry to get messed up, parents get confused, coaches, get confused, and heck, we the administrators get confused. And I think most would agree that softball team chemistry makes for better competition and it would be alot easier if all of us were going by the same set of rules.

In addition, as softball develops here in Baja and Mexico, it will also cause disparities with our softball neighbors up Norte in the USA because they aim to bring their all-star and travel teams down to play us and hopefully we can travel up there as well. We simply have different rules by how we build our teams and that causes problems. We need to fix this thing.

We should go by the same rules so it makes playing one another much easier and gives us here in Mexico more chances to build our programs against what is currently the top softball programs in the world, namely the USA.

Now, as stated above, we operate under the ASA Rules so that the cut-off date for the youth age eligibility is December 31st. That means whatever age the child is on December 31st of the prior year is the eligible division for the current year.

For example, a child who turns a child who turns age 13 on Jan. 1st or after is eligible to play 12 & Under for the whole calendar year. It's that simple.

To make it super simple, just think of this year of 2009. Who is eligible?

Basically, a player born in 1996-1997 or thereafter, if your league or team allows younger players to move up, is a 12 and Under player for the whole year of 2009. Now, if your player is born in 1995, she's NOT a 12 and Under player. She would be a 14 and under Player. It's really that simple.

Basically, all you have to do is determine what year they were born and that will tell you what division they are in for the whole calendar year. It makes things quite easy and stops us for scrambling around each time we have to play a tournament to figure out who can and who cannot play.

Of course, each year, the league or team just has to figure out who belongs in the 8u, 10u, 12u and 14u teams using the birth year. Keeping it simple for everyone!

The Tijuana Cobritas took the cup on Saturday Feb. 21 after a grueling 6 games played in one day that saw them take 5 wins and 1 tie. Led by a strong pitcher combination, the Cobritas were almost unstopable. With the Mexicali Chicas, San Luis Colorado, Ensenada Chispitas and El Sauzal Uvitas all fighting for 2nd and 3rd all the way to the last game, the tournament was a complete success. The second season is starting locally for a new fast pitch softball league drawing girls from the Ensenada, El Sauzal, San Antonio de las Minas and the Valle de Guadalupe areas.

The players range from 8 to 12 years old. The concept was not founded by any one person, it is a community effort to benefit the welfare and spirit of these often poor and less advantaged children. In life frequently we find our greatest happiness can be realized by contributing to the welfare of those less fortunate than ourselves. This endeavor is designed to involve participants in this new sport (to them), hopefully resulting in opening up further possibilities for them in the future - besides being wives, homemakers, and caretakers.

Last year, during the third week of May team leaders were out recruiting players for the clinic scheduled June 7. On Wednesday May 21st they assembled at one of the local schools in El Sauzal and held a practice for the kids. In all, there were over 100 girls involved in the practice. They set up stations for catching and throwing along with hitting drills for the girls to get them interested in the game. By the end of practice over 80 girls signed up for the summer clinic with the organizations administrator, Dr. Irma Lozano.

Ensenada is already ahead in the development of their girls softball leagues as they have over 30 experience players. One of the girls is named ADANESNE, pronounced Ada-Nes-Nay which is Ensenada spelled backwards. She is 10 years old and she’s been playing in Ensenada for 3 years. She works out with the bigger older girls because that’s really the only place to for her to play. This new league concept is designed so she can play on a team of her own age group against girls her own age.

On this past Saturday, January 24th, the league had 6 teams each with about 14 players on the field playing practice games. There were about 80 players on the field. It was the biggest turnout ever! It is thought that there were another 20 players that could not attend that may show up this coming Saturday for the Official Try Outs. Coach Patty, Lupita, Christina, Osvaldo, Evelyn, and Ivan all fielded teams picked in a fun draft. They all were fantastic and did a great job managing the chaos and fun! With the draft held at 9am, each coach got to pick players from the whole group so that kids from Ensenada were playing on the same team as kids from El Sauzal and Valle de Guadalupe. They all got a chance to get to know all the players. With very few hiccups, it was quite successful. If the league has 100 players this coming Saturday, they have 2 new coaches waiting in the wings to join in and make the 7th and 8th team.

The response has already been more than the league can handle. It is feared there will be too many players and not enough equipment. It is possible there may be more than the 100 players for the start of the second season early next month. Quoting Coach Charles Tawil, “Because the sport is new to almost every girl involved, it’s mission critical that we demonstrate in person and put the balls and bats in the girls hands so that they can get the enthusiasm for the game that we know will spark them to participate. We need at least another 60 gloves for the new season as most players can’t afford to buy them. ”

When asked if there are any local Churches involved, he added “The underlying core principles of what we do are centered in the teachings of “being good and doing good”. There is no specific church locally involved but our leadership absolutely leans on the moral values espoused by the Judeo Christian ethic. All players of all faiths are invited to the program. Everyone plays and everyone is truly important.”

Building a League in Ensenada: Open Letter to Leaders

This is an open letter proposal to the leaders of softball in Ensenada and anyone else in Mexico who seeks to find a great way to organize a successful youth league. It’s meant to be a guideline for leaders to adopt and implement.

First, before you read, what people must understand is that, in Mexico, most of the programs are run by what is referred to as "Travel Ball" programs in the USA. These teams travel far to play other teams or play with the local boys baseball team or even against older women in local leagues.

They are typically run by one strong leader who controls the whole program. Yet, the travel programs are not even close to competitive when it comes to the USA. The reason is that there is no feeder programs or what is commonly known as in the USA as "Rec Leagues" or recreation programs which are in fact, park leagues for all kids and players to learn, develope, and have fun learning team sport.

From these "Rec Leagues", travel ball teams are able to recruit the best and the brightest. Some A level "Rec Leagues" in the USA have over 1000 kids playing youth softball. Even in C leagues, there are around 200 to 300 players. These feeder programs really set the stage and foundation for building up world class travel teams and rending the USA programs the model for the world.

In Mexico, there are virtually no feeder programs. Thus, these "travel team" programs are NOT getting the best players and frankly are missing out those thousands of players that could be playing recreation ball thus feeding them the cream of the crop. In the end, Mexico's youth softball suffers from being highly uncompetitive.

Yes there are new leaders and new forces out there that yearn to build programs on par with USA programs. They want to be competitive. Yet, to do so, would require building "Rec Programs". In lieu, we offer this blueprint below for the Ensenada Girls League that currently has 4 travel teams in their program. By building up a true Recreation league, they have a unique opportunity to become the first true Rec League in Mexico.

Ensenada Youth Girls Softball League (EYGSL)

MISSON & GOAL:

To be the very best Youth Fastpitch Softball Program in Baja California Mexico and a model of success for all of Mexico Youth Softball with over 200 players registered by Spring Season 2010 playing recreation ball and fielding strong All-Star Teams for each division for summer tournament play that has long term sustainability and continuity over time.

THE VISION: 2009-2010

By the beginning of Spring Season 2010 (February 2010) we aim to have over 200 players from 6–14 years of age, playing recreational fastpitch softball in 4 divisions: 8u, 10u, 12u, and 14u within 2 major divisions;

(1) Ensenada

(2) El Sauzal.

To meet this challenge, we will EMPOWER and develop new coaches and parents to contribute to the program via volunteerism.

PRINCIPLES

Every player plays is our simple core idea and developing players for both sport and good citizenship is our underlying principle that governs our direction. We also aim to develop all players and provide the skills they need to succeed in both softball and as solid successful citizens.

LEAGUE SEASONS

We shall support and play 2 seasons each year;

(1) WINTER: Sep-Dec

(2) SPRING: Feb-May

FAIR AND FUN LEAGUE PLAY

To insure that all teams are fair and fun each season, starting in Spring 2009, each Division will run sign-ups, try-outs, and a draft. In this way, each team in the league will have the opportunity to have a balance of advanced, intermediate and beginning players.

LEADING AND MANAGING THE MISSION

To accomplish our goal of 300 players by 2010, we shall run our league with a Board of Directors comprised of strong independent and experienced leaders who will provide the leadership and direction while each local Division will be run autonomously by a local Managing Board of Directors. In this way, each division can make fast and efficient decisions to insure speedy and fast action on the ground to move the mission forward.

FUNDING THE PROGRAM

Our League Board of Directors will be mandated with obtaining major funding for the league including but not limited to recruiting, promotion, media, equipment, and scholarship funding for proven underprivileged players. The idea is keep costs as close to zero for each player to participate. This action will encourage players to join and allow for growth of the sport especially with the financially challenged.

ALL-STAR TEAMS

We shall name and support one (1) All-Star Team for divisions 14u, 12u, and 10u after each Spring Season for tournament play each summer against teams from other All-Star Recreation Leagues in Mexico and the USA. These teams will be the Official Ensenada All-Star Teams made of our very best coaches and players as voted in by the League Board of Directors. Each Head Coach is voted in by the League Board of Directors. Each All-Star Player is voted in by the Head Coaches of each division.Our 14u, 12u, and 10u teams to play during the Summer at All-Star Tournaments both in Mexico and the USA.

The leaders of the new Ensenada Girls Softball League met this past week to put the final touches on the new Community Development League that starts it’s winter league play Sept 20^th and goes until Dec. 7^th. Under the League umbrella, there will be two divisions; Ensenada and El Sauzal. With both communities participating in the new combined league, there will be more players, coaches, and leaders involved in the league as it makes it’s move to be the biggest, brightest, and best league in Baja.

“Our goal is 300 players in our league by 2010” quips league Director Charles Tawil. “We can accomplish this bright and realistic goal by recruiting, promoting, and insuring that our on the field performance is fun for the player, parents, and all involved”.

Currently, the league has 110 players signed up in 3 categories; 8 and Under, 10 and Under, and 12 and Under. Each category will field 4 teams that will play each week on Saturdays at the El Sauzal Sports Park. They will play 12 league games during the winter season with playoffs at the end deciding a champion.

Each player will receive a participation medal the with the League champions receiving championship T-Shirts to commemorate their achievements. The league will play both Winter and Spring seasons with an All-Star Team for each category being chosen at the end of the Spring season to play in Summer All-Star Tournaments both here in Mexico and in the USA.

“With a combined leagued, our All-Star teams will be competitive with other C rated recreation and community leagues in the USA” says Patty Campuzano, President of the Ensenada Board of the Directors that manages the El Sauzal division. “We really think that this is the best for us to field tournament teams that are on par with the best of leagues in Mexico and the USA.

As the league prepares for it’s innaguaration of the new combined league Sept, 20^tth,the players and coaches are finishing up their summer tournament season. The 12u El Sauzal All-Stars will travel to Tijuana to play in the big Otay Mesa International Tournament on Aug. 30 and 31. They play 3 games on Saturday and play single elimination on Sunday.

El Sauzal will host is last summer tournament on Sept 5-6, when they host a 6 team 10u and Under Tournament at the El Sauzal Sports Park. Confirmed teams are Tijuana Cobritas, Tijuana Yankees, Ensenada Chispitas, Ensenada Diablitas, El Sauzal Uvitas, and the El Sauzal Sirenitas.

INTERVIEW: Meet Veronica Fonseca, the Future of Softball in Baja California

Veronica Fonseca, a young pitcher from Ensenada is lighting up the fields of Ensenada with heat and fire! She is turnng heads as she now branches out to play in tournament ball around the state. Some are calling her one of the best pitchers if not one of the best players in her age group in all of Baja.

Veronica pitches in the New Ensenada Youth Softball League for the Chispitas. She plays pitcher and puts fear in the hearts of opposing batters every time she takes the mound.

“Her control, speed, and demeanor are second to none” says Ensenada Youth League Director of Sponsorship and Public Relations Lonnie Ryan. “What makes her even more dangerous is her great winning attitude, first class energy, and excellent athletic ability not to mention her all around play from base running, batting, and game knowledge. This kid is an All-Star all the way and the future of Baja Softball is great with Veronica there leading the way”

"Every time we face the Chispitas, we simply have to ask our batters to get in there, do their best, and pray to the softball gods to just give us one chance to hit her heat" says Coach Marcos Cisneros of the El Sauzal Uvitas. "She's a real dominating pitcher and as of now, we still have NO answer for her pitches"

El Sauzal Board Names New President

The El Sauzal Division Board of Directors Names President

Today, the El Sauzal Division Board of Directors of the Ensenada Youth Softball League elected Maria de Jesus Carrillo (Chullita) President of the Board. Chullita is the mother of 10 and Under pitcher Daniela Sandoval Sandez who plays for the Sirenitas within the league.

The President of the Division Board of Directors reports directly to the League Board of Directors and represents their respective division in all league wide matters.

Chullita brings with a her a team of Directors that will manage the affairs of the El Sauzal Division including managing the players, coaches, uniforms, equipment, and local sponsorship.

“We are right now preparing to host our big tournament to be held September 5-7 here in El Sauzal for a 10 and Under. Tijuana is bringing 3 teams along with 2 teams from Ensenada and 1 team from Mexicali.” Says Chullita. “We have lots of work to do to make our tournament successful and fun”.

Aug, 23, the New Ensenada Youth Recreation Softball League will host practice games for the 10 and Under Division. The El Sauzal Sirenitas and Uvitas will be joined by the Ensenada Chispitas and Diablitas in final push before they get into Winter League play starting Sept. 20. Games will be held in El Sauzal from 8am to 2pm Aug 23. For updated league play schedule, click here.
Aug, 30, both Ensenada and El Sauzal Divisions of the League will be sending teams to the Tijuana Otay Softball Tournament to be held on Saturday and Sunday at the OTAY fields in Tijuana. BajaSoftball will be there to report on the outcome of games and post images for the Youth Games.
Sept 5 – 8, El Sauzal will host a big tournament by the sea for 10 and Unders. 3 Teams from Tijuana, 1 Team from Mexicali, 2 Teams from Ensenada and 2 Teams from El Sauzal will be fighting to win the Tournament Title. For schedule, click here.

Chispitas win weekend 12u Tournament in El Sauzal

(Sat Aug. 16) --- In the final game of the day, the 12 and Under Ensenada Chispitas led by a 4 run homer beat the El Sauzal Uvitas by a score of 8 to 4. The game ended on time as the Uvitas had bases loaded with big hitter Joanna Sandoval at the plate. Wisely, the Chispitas Catcher asked the umpire for game time and requested the game end on time. After checking his time, the Umpire called the game just as the Uvitas were ready to take a shot at the equalizer.

It was an exciting game and proved that the Chispitas are the still the areas best team but that the Uvitas are nipping at their heels.

In the other days games, the Chispitas beat the Sirentas of El Sauzal 17 to 1 and the Uvitas beat the Sirenitas 9 to 5.

Surprise, there is a 9 year old gringita that plays in our new Ensenada Girls Softball Fastpitch League named Maya Burns. She has lived here in Baja since she was 4 years old. She is super amazing!

Not only can she bat the ball like Andrea Duran, but she can belt out the ranchero mariachi music Linda Ronstadt style. Yeah, without accompaniment too…perfect tone, volume, pace and presence. Amazing!

RESULTS: Ensenada Summer Youth Fastpitch Tournament

At the new Softball Field in Ensenada called the "Jose Prieto Soto Stadium" the Chispitas 10u were crowned champions in a hard fought victory in the champtionship game versus the Sirenitas from El Sauzal

The Champions won by a big score of 17 runs to 4 runs led by ace pitcher Veronic Fonseca. The Sirentas coached by Ivan Damazo gave it everything that had but could not overcome the pitching ace for the Chispitas.

Without their star short stop Alejandra Mendoza, the Uvitas led by pitchers Paola Prado and Johanna Sandoval gave a valiant effort against the stronger Diablitas from Ensenada in a excellent game for 3rd place.

In a hard fought first game, the Sirenitas led by the pitching of Valeria Berencia and Vanessa Nunes prevailed by a hard fought last inning surge of runs. The Uvitas pitchers Paola Prado and Johanna Sandoval kept the game close but could not close it out in the last inning.

Led by the twin sisters Alexa and Alexis Coral, the Chispitas dominated on defense and held on to score runs to defeat the Diablitas in the 2nd Qualifying game.

Yesterday at the El Sauzal 12 and Under Summer Tournament, the Chispitas led by their young dynamic pitcher Veronica Fonseca beat the Uvitas led by pitcher Johanna Sandoval with a score of 13 to 6. In the 3^rd place game, the Diablitas defeated the Sirenitas 17 to 1

CHISPITAS 13 - Uvitas 6

The final game was exciting as the Chispitas jumped on Uvitas after the first inning 3 runs to zero and added a 7 more in the next innings. The pitching of Veronica Fonseca overwhelmed the batters of the Uvitas as they have never played against such pitching speed. As the game wore on, the batters caught up to the Chispitas’ pitcher and began a hitting spree with a late run in the 5 inning led by Alejandra Mendoza and Rocio Palacios only to be stopped by the excellent defense of the Chispitas.

Weekly Update from the Ensenada Softball League

This past Saturday, the Uvitas teams for both 10U and 12u played the Sirenitas 10u and 12u teams in practice games as they gear up for the big summer tournament showdown next week against the Chispitas and Diablitas from Ensenada.

In the 12u Game, the Sirenitas of El Sauzal, led by the consistent pitching from Valeria Hernandez beat the Uvitas in a tight game 9 - 6, with the go ahead runs scored in the last inning.

In the 10u game, the talented Uvitas led by Pitcher Johana Sandoval and Short Stop Alejandra Mendoza's 3 home runs scored 14 runs to edge out the scrappy Sirenitas who scored 11 runs.

Guest Umpire, Part-Time Resident, and Softball Community Activist and Sponsor Mark Tobbio ran an efficient game as the Pitchers and Batters dueled it out in the first practice games of the summer.

This Saturday at 8am to 2pm, El Sauzal Sports Complex hosts the first 12 and Under 4 Team Tournament of the Summer. Come by and see the Chispitas, Diablitas, Sirenitas, and Uvitas battle it out for the Champion's Trophy.

Everyone plays both at bat and on the field
Games will be 1 hour
No official scores will be kept
The distance from the front side of the pitcher’s plate to the point of home plate shall be 30 feet.
Base paths distance will be 60 feet in length
The pitching circle shall be 8 feet in radius, with the center of the circle 40 feet from the point of home plate.
The defensive team shall have no more than 6 infielders. All other available players shall be positioned in the outfield at least 10 feet behind the baselines until the ball is batted.
All available players shall be listed in the batting order and shall bat in their turn.
In the case of injury or illness, the injured of ill player shall miss her turn at bat with no penalty.
Use of the Tee

A) When a batter gets 4 “balls” from the pitcher, the batter uses the tee to hit the ball

B) When a batter gets 3 “strikes” from the pitcher, the batter uses the tee to hit the ball

Base runners must remain on base until the ball is batted. There shall be no stealing of bases.
The infield fly rule is not in effect.
A pitcher who hits 3 batters with pitched balls in the same game shall be removed from that game as the “pitcher”.
Play shall stop when the umpire declares “Time Out” because the defensive team has stopped the advance of the lead runner or when a member of the defensive team has control of the ball inside the pitching circle with no attempt from the base runner to advance to the next base.
An inning shall end when:

A) The last batter in the batting order strikes out or hits the ball and gets on base.

B) The defensive team gets the third out

C) A defensive player touches home plate while in possession of the ball after the ball is put into play by the last batter in the batting order

On 11th Street just off Espinosa next to the Fire Department, our new field has artificial turf, excellent infield dirt, bleachers with an announcers booth, kids area, concession stand and vendor area with excellent dugouts and clean bathrooms facilities.

7th Team Added: Introducing the Estrellitas (8under)

Due to more kids signing up for the 8 and under division, El Sauzal has added a 3^rd team to it’s program. Along with Uvitas (Little Grapes) and Sirenitas (Little Mermaids) , we’ve added the Estrellitas (Little Stars). The new coach is Coach Daniel Caro. They practice every Thursday and Saturday at 11am in El Sauzal Sports Park.

Each of the 8 and Under Teams have a maximum of 10 players. When and if the pitcher throws 4 balls, then the tee comes out for the batter. The 8 and under division is designed to help players develop softball skills while having fun and enjoying the game. It’s an everyone plays league where everyone wins when they play.

As we work towards league play in September, there is a good chance that we will end up with a 4^th team in El Sauzal when added with teams in Ensenada, will make our league 6 to 8 teams for this 8 and under division.

6 El Sauzal Teams Come Together for 1st Tournament

The Uvitas and Sirenitas from El Sauzal just north of Ensenada have finally come together with players and coaches from ages 5 to 12 year olds. With 6 teams, 1 for each of the 3 categories, El Sauzal will field teams agains the teams visiting from Ensenada for friendly fun tournaments this July and August as El Sauzal prepares for the upcoming Winter season that starts in September.

Coache Ivan Damazo will be coaching the Sirenitas Teams for 12u, 10u, and 8u, while Francisco Sandez will be coaching the Uvitas 8u Team and Marcos Tovar coaches the Uvitas 12u team. We have over 60 players signed up and we expect much more to join before the season starts in September.

Oh, we re in need of a Coach! The Uvitas 10u team is temporarily being coached a composite of parents until a coach can be found. HELP! If you want to coach or know someone who can, contact us ASAP. American Expats Donate to Baja Softball Kids

Captain Lonnie Ryan, a resident of Ensenada and proprietor of GillyBilly.com, a fishing fanatics web site, has donated gloves, balls, and bats to the players on the new El Sauzal Teams. "It's truly my pleasure to assist" says a humble Captain Ryan. "Helping the community is the least I can do.

Also, Alice, who lives on a boat out in the harbor traveled back to the states to pick up some gloves for the kids at the goodwill store......Alice has taken a teaching position at the local college in Ensenada says "Ensenada is such a great place to be...I am just fortunate to have the ability to shine a light where I can"

And a big shout out to the folks on the S.S. Bucket List on in Coral Bay Harbor Ensenada.....thx the gloves folks. Those kids really appreciate the good energy.

Building Girls Softball in Baja, Brick by Brick

So we had our first clinic this past Saturday. It was super duper! We had 47 kids from 5 to 12 years old show up. Most of them were from the El Sauzal Area with a few from Ensenada and the Valle de Guadalupe.

It was impressive because everyone said it could NOT be done, that El Sauzal would not support girls sports or that they were too impoverished to come out and play….and boy, were they wrong. Already we have more players here than in Ensenada signed up.

Over the next 3 months as we continue to develop these new players and recruit more from this area, we will be able to create two teams for each division (8u, 10u, and 12u). That’s the goal. We estimate it will take about 80 players to get to that point - which means we are just about 33 players or so away from that goal. I think we can do that in 3 months.

Also, we had 5 coaches from Ensenada show up at our clinic. They were impressed. They want the same clinic to be held in Ensenada so that those players can show up and play. I think we can do that because we need at least 2 teams for each to come of out of Ensenada by September so that we can begin the league play. So yeah, we have to figure this out and get it done. With a huge population of Ensenada, we can get it done. I will meet with the Ensenada leaders this week and put it together.

You know, this is only the beginning. I can envision years down the road whereby the candle that was sparked this past weekend was what started the true developmental softball program for youth here in Baja and that would spread statewide and even spark programs in other states while Mexico builds towards a National Team that can compete worldwide with nations like Canada, China, Venezuela, and even the USA.

After all, do you remember that the boys of Monterrey Mexico won the Little League World Series in 1957. Yep, they did……..and so why can’t our girls someday be as great! I think we can. But first, lots of work to do……building the foundation is what is required now…..brick by brick.

ENSENADA AREA GIRLS SOFTBALL IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS AND EQUIPMENT

The season is starting locally for a new fast pitch softball league drawing girls from the Ensenada, El Sauzal, San Antonio de las Minas and the Valle de Guadalupe areas. The players range from 5 to 12 years old. The concept was not founded by any one person, it is a community effort to benefit the welfare and spirit of these often poor and less advantaged children. In life frequently we find our greatest happiness can be realized by contributing to the welfare of those less fortunate than ourselves.

During the third week of May team leaders were out recruiting players for the upcoming clinic scheduled June 7. On Wednesday May 21^st they assembled at one of the local schools in El Sauzal and held a practice for the kids. In all, there were over 100 girls involved in the practice. They set up stations for catching and throwing along with hitting drills for the girls to get them interested in the game. By the end of practice over 80 girls signed up for the summer clinic with the organizations administrator, Dr. Irma Lozano. It is possible there may be more than the 140 players expected for the June 7 practice. These practice sessions will extend through August 23. The new league had an exhibition game in San Antonio de las Minas May 22^nd. There were 2 teams from Ensenada showing off the game to that community. In El Sauzal, they plan a big 4 team round robin tournament on May 31^st at 11am.

Along with the players, the league is seeking to recruit both male and female coaches. Currently there are 4 female coaches and 4 male coaches. The league is encouraging all in the community to volunteer to help in any possible way imaginable from transportation to coaching. For the clinics in El Sauzal, since most of the players will come from El Sauzal, the girls will just walk to the practices. As for the Valle de Guadalupe, the coaches will offer transportation and will pick up the players and take them to the clinics, only a 15 minute drive. Also, the league is looking for parents who can help with transportation. The Valle de Guadalupe has proven to have awesome players, they just need a bit of support. The parents there typically don’t have the money for gas for transportation to the fields of play. Hopefully the families will be able to attend, making this venture an entire family event bringing together the whole community surrounding healthy sporting competition.

Ensenada is already ahead in the development of their girls softball leagues as they have over 30 experience players. One of the girls is named ADANESNE, pronounced Ada-Nes-Nay which is Ensenada spelled backwards. She is 9 years old and she’s been playing in Ensenada for 2 years. She works out with the bigger older girls because that’s really the only place to for her to play. There is no league yet for 5 to 12 year olds in Ensenada. This new league is designed so she can play on a team of her own age group against girls her own age.

Quoting Coach Charles Tawil, “Because the sport is new to almost every girl involved, it’s mission critical that we demonstrate in person and put the balls and bats in the girls hands so that they can get the enthusiasm for the game that we know will spark them to participate. We need at least another 60 gloves for the clinics as most players can’t afford to buy them. ” When asked if there are any local Churches involved, he added “The underlying core principles of what we do are centered in the teachings of “being good and doing good”. There is no specific church locally involved but our leadership absolutely leans on the moral values espoused by the Judeo Christian ethic. All players of all faiths are invited to the program. Everyone plays and everyone is truly important.”

The response has already been more than the league can handle. It is feared there will be too many players and not enough coaches. “Don’t worry,” commented Coach Tawil “you don’t have to be a pro coach. You only have to have the desire to help out, learn the game, and be willing to persevere while we all learn and progress together. We will take everyone who cares. Remember, this is recreation softball and 99% of players are beginners too. We are all in this together.”

WEEKLY UPDATE

Coach Paty Campuzano brought two Ensenada teams to the El Sauzal Tournament this weekend. It was a fun day of softball for the kids. The purpose of the tournament was to expose the game to the local El Sauzal kids. Lots of parents and kids attended and were exposed to the game.
At the tournament, 26 new players from El Sauzal signed up for the upcoming clinic that starts this Saturday at 8am.
Our recruiting goal for El Sauzal is 78 players by August 15^th, which will give us 2 teams in each division (8u, 10u, and 12u) ready for play in the new September League. So we are on a good pace to reach that goal.
Local El Sauzal Coached Ivan and Carlos will be going to the local El Sauzal Schools on Friday to recruit and bring in more players as they work towards that goal.
About 30 new players from the Ensenada area are expected to attend the upcoming Baja Softball Clinic this weekend and for the next 3 months as they further develop their skills towards playing in their first league coming this September.
The goal for Ensenada is to field 2 teams for each division (8u, 10u, and 12u) giving the league 4 teams in each division making league play fun and competitive.

We are looking forward to participate in tournaments you might have. We are a 12 under softball team. We have 12 girls on the team. We would the girls to experience international softball games. Well Rose, super thank you for contacting us today. We would love to have you come on down. We are a new program statewide here in Baja. So no tournaments yet. However, we are in the process of building our first international tournament for next year, 2009

We are working towards that over time……and will host TRAVEL TEAM softball in 2010.
